People were here in the Old Stone Age. Flint tools recovered from the farmland go back to around thirty thousand years before Christ, with other finds from the Middle Stone Age and the Bronze Age, and pits and post holes point to very early settlement. Water gave the place its name.

The Stadtteil stayed largely rural through the industrial transformation of the rest of Essen, which is why woodland and agricultural holdings still dominate it.
Housing came in patches. Denser residential quarters sit among the fields rather than replacing them, and Fischlaken remains the most rural part of the southern city.
