Two brooks mark its edges. Borbecker Mühlenbach separates Schönebeck from Altendorf and Frohnhausen on the east and the Rosendeller Bach from Mülheim an der Ruhr-Winkhausen on the south, and the Stadtteil sits above the Winkhauser Tal between them. Mülheim is over the western line. Bedingrade and Mülheim an der Ruhr-Dümpten adjoin that way, with Borbeck-Mitte and Bochold to the north.

What are the main landmarks in Schönebeck?
A wartime bunker is the listed building. Built between 1940 and 1941 under the Führer emergency programme on the Frintroper Straße by the Fliegenbusch stop, the six-storey air-raid tower held two hundred and fifty people and was placed under monument protection in 2014. Mining shaped the rest.
Schönebeck belonged to the coal and heavy industry belt, and the workers' colonies built for it are what most of the older housing is. Wooded side valleys break the pattern. The Siepentäler cut into the ground around the Winkhauser Tal and are what is left of the landscape the Bauerschaft farmed.
What is the history of Schönebeck?
The name is official from 1795. Schönebeck was a Bauerschaft then, a farming settlement rather than a village with a core, and that is the earliest documentary form of the name. Borbeck took it in 1808.
From 1 September that year Schönebeck belonged to the Bürgermeisterei Borbeck, and Borbeck in turn was incorporated into Essen in 1915. Coal and steel remade it. Like the rest of the city area the Stadtteil was shaped by mining and heavy industry, and the workers' colonies built for that labour are still its dominant housing.
Bombing damaged it badly. Schönebeck suffered heavy damage from air raids in the Second World War, and the six-storey shelter tower on the Frintroper Straße was put up between 1940 and 1941 for two hundred and fifty people. Borbeck is the district it answers to.
The Stadtbezirk IV Borbeck now groups Bedingrade, Bergeborbeck, Bochold, Borbeck-Mitte, Dellwig, Frintrop, Gerschede and Schönebeck together.
