The Rü is the reason. Around a hundred cafés, pubs and restaurants line the Rüttenscheider Straße along with the shops, which makes this the one part of Essen where the evening does not stop when the tills close. Getting about is easy.
The U11 runs under it, tram lines 101, 106, 107 and 108 cross it, the Rüttenscheider Stern and Martinstraße are the interchanges, and the Essen Süd stop on S-Bahn line 6 sits in the eastern tip. Events are worth timing for. The Rü-Fest and the Rüttenscheider Musiknacht fill the street with music, the Rü-Cup brings an international bike race through it, and the Tour de Rü and the Rüttenscheider Wintermarkt round out the year.

About Rüttenscheid
What are the main landmarks in Rüttenscheid?
The Gruga is the draw. The Grugapark and the Grugahalle sit at the southeastern end with the Messe Essen beside them, and the Grugabad and the Schwimmzentrum Rüttenscheid give the Stadtteil two public pools. Two big institutions balance the leisure.
The Justizzentrum Essen holds the Amtsgericht, the Landgericht, the Arbeitsgericht, the prosecutor's office and the Landessozialgericht with a remand prison attached, and the Polizeipräsidium Essen stands nearby. One old works became a passage. The Girardet-Haus in southern Rüttenscheid was a printing plant before it was rebuilt with practices, a dance school, a senior residence, a brewery inn and restaurants, and the Siedlung Altenhof to the southeast was a Krupp estate for retired company workers.
What is the history of Rüttenscheid?
The first mention is 970. Rüttenscheid appears in the record that year, and the farming settlement of Fugalinghusen, later Vöcklinghausen, which belonged to it, appears earlier still in 943. The name came out of the reeds.
The medieval form Riudenscethe rests on hriudi for sedge grass, and it was the cutting of that grass that made the ground settleable in the first place. One old road runs through the middle. The way from Essen to Werden became the Rüttenscheider Straße, and a Siechenkapelle was built along it between 1422 and 1445 to serve the patients of the Siechenhof, a leper house standing in the wood that took people until about 1726.
Industry and administration came much later. The Girardet printing works and the Krupp estate at Altenhof belong to the industrial city, and the Justizzentrum, the Polizeipräsidium, E.ON, the Ruhrbahn, the Stadtwerke Essen and Steag have made the Stadtteil an administrative and corporate address since.
Where is Rüttenscheid?
Rüttenscheid lies south of Essen's Innenstadt between the Albrechtstraße and the Kahrstraße in the north and the end of the Grugapark in the south, with the Rellinghauser Straße and the A52 on the east and the Külshammerweg on the west, bordering Holsterhausen, Margarethenhöhe, Bredeney, Stadtwald, Bergerhausen and Huttrop.
