Two to three storeys is the pattern here. Open building of that height still shapes the whole Stadtteil, put up early in the last century for the miners of the pits nearby. Traffic has been calmed.
Everything except the Hafenstraße and the Krablerstraße is quiet, and the green area has grown under the woodland programme for the north of Essen. Work is at the city harbour and the trading estates.

What are the main landmarks in Vogelheim?
A memorial stone marks where Krupp began. It stands in the street An der Walkmühle, on the site of the first works of what became the Friedrich Krupp company, where the founder set up his first tilt hammer in 1812. The Vogelheimer Klinge was found in 1926.
That blade is the oldest human tool discovered in the region, and it made the Stadtteil known well beyond Essen. Birds fill the coat of arms. Three of them come from the arms of the hereditary owners of Vogelheim, who sold the estate to the related von Knippenburg family, and the family that bought it carried the same three birds.
What is the history of Vogelheim?
Vogelheim was farming country in the Middle Ages. Two moated seats, Heck and Horl, shaped it, and the settlement stayed agricultural for centuries. Mining changed it after 1900.
The old farming ground became a miners' quarter, and the Wildstraße colony was built in 1903 to house the men coming to the Zeche Emil, later the Zeche Emil-Emscher. The pit closed in 1973. Structural change followed, with the industrial land turned into estates for small and medium firms, while the harbour, the care homes and the wholesale and retail trade carry the work now.
A comprehensive school opened in 1990. The Gesamtschule Nord was formally inaugurated on 21 September that year.

Vogelheim lies in the north of Essen against the city harbour, the youngest Stadtteil of its district, with Karnap beyond the Rhein-Herne-Kanal to the north.
