About Katernberg
What are the main landmarks in Katernberg?
Three churches stand in Katernberg: Heilig-Geist-Kirche, the Evangelical church that carries the borough's own name, and the Catholic parish of St. Joseph. The Evangelical church dates from 1901. It is the largest Protestant church in Essen, known locally as the Bergmannsdom, the miners' cathedral.
Part of the Zeche Zollverein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, lies in Katernberg too: the Schacht 4/5/11 shaft complex, now the Triple Z start-up centre.
What is the history of Katernberg?
Katernberg is first mentioned in 1220, in the bailiwick roll of Count Friedrich von Isenberg-Altena. It passed to the new Bürgermeisterei Stoppenberg in 1874 and joined Essen in 1929. Coal made it.
The Zeche Zollverein colliery, working from 1847, turned a village of 371 people in 1815 into a town of more than fifteen thousand by 1900; it closed in 1986, and the coking plant in 1993.
