What are the main landmarks in Höhenberg?

Höhenberg's parish church is St. Elisabeth, a brick hall church built in 1908-10 and consecrated on 18 December 1910; the district's highest point, about 55 m, lies right beside it. The Mülheimer Friedhof, a 20-hectare cemetery, opened on 30 November 1904. Sports grounds were laid out from 1920; their stadium, rebuilt in 1929-31, became the Sportpark Höhenberg.

At the end of the 1920s Mayor Konrad Adenauer had the Merheimer Heide turned into a park.

What is the history of Höhenberg?

Höhenberg was for centuries only a field name for a rise in the Rhine's lower terrace, along which the border between Kurköln and the Duchy of Berg ran from 1147 to 1803. An 1863 map shows one toll house. Building began around 1900, with the industry of neighbouring Kalk and Mülheim.

After the First World War the GAG built the Germaniasiedlung on the site of a failed blast-furnace works, its streets named after towns in Thuringia, home of the patron saint Elisabeth. By 1928 it was one of the largest connected housing estates in Germany.

Höhenberg borders Buchheim on the B 55a to the north, Merheim and Ostheim on the green belt to the east, Vingst to the south and Kalk at the rail yards.
