About Ingelheim am Rhein
What is Ingelheim am Rhein known for?
Ingelheim am Rhein is known for its Imperial Palace, which served emperors and kings as a lodging and a seat of rule from the late 8th century until the 11th century. Red wine is its other mark: more than half of its vineyards grow red varieties, Spätburgunder above all, in a region of white wine. Ingelheim is called the Rotweinstadt.
Sour cherries and white asparagus are its other main crops. The Vereinigte Obst- und Gemüsemärkte in the town are a transshipment centre for sour cherries.
What are the main landmarks in Ingelheim am Rhein?
The remains of the Imperial Palace in Ingelheim am Rhein stand beside the Museum bei der Kaiserpfalz, which shows the golden solidus found in 1996, the only gold coin ever found struck with Charlemagne's effigy. The Saalkirche, built in 997 as the palace chapel, is its best-preserved part. In Ober-Ingelheim the Burgkirche, inside a double ring wall of the 13th century, is one of the best-preserved fortified churches of southwest Germany, and the former Cistercian nunnery of Kloster Engelthal, first recorded in 1290, stretches from the Ohrenbrücker Tor.
Nieder-Ingelheim's St. Remigius keeps a Romanesque tower.
What is the history of Ingelheim am Rhein?
Franks settled the area of Ingelheim am Rhein from the 5th century, and Ober-Ingelheim grew into one of its first villages. Charlemagne, whose first recorded stay in Ingelheim dates from 774, turned a Merovingian royal estate into an imperial palace, and Nieder-Ingelheim grew up beside it; nine synods met there between the 8th and the 10th century. His son Louis the Pious died on 20 June 840 in a summer tent on an island in the Rhine off Ingelheim.
Frederick Barbarossa rebuilt the palace as a fortified castle before 1160, but from the 13th century it declined. For centuries the Ingelheimer Oberhof heard appeals from the courts around it, leaving a unique collection of judgments, until it was replaced in 1680. The cosmographer Sebastian Münster was born in Ingelheim in 1488.
French rule came in 1797, and in 1816 the villages passed to Hesse-Darmstadt as part of Rhenish Hesse. On 1 April 1939 Nieder-Ingelheim, Ober-Ingelheim and Frei-Weinheim were merged into one town, which came through the Second World War as the only unscathed town between Mainz and Koblenz. Groß-Winternheim joined in 1972.
Where is Ingelheim am Rhein?
Ingelheim am Rhein lies in the north of Rhenish Hesse on the Rhine Knee, about 15 kilometres west of Mainz, with the Rhine as its border with Hesse. To the south the town reaches into the valley of the Selz between the heights of the Mainzer Berg and the Westerberg. The Bismarck Tower, finished in 1912, stands on the Westerberg.
What is Ingelheim am Rhein like?

What is the climate of Ingelheim am Rhein?
Ingelheim am Rhein lies in the temperate zone. January is its coldest month, and July and August are the warmest. Like all of Rhenish Hesse, the town is sheltered from the weather by the Hunsrück, the Taunus, the Odenwald and the Donnersberg, so its rainfall is low.
June and August bring the most rain, and March the least.
