Where to stay in Kronshagen

Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.

Kronshagen lies about six kilometres from Kiel's city centre and borders Kiel on the north, south and east and the municipality of Ottendorf on the west. In Kronshagen, the garden town along the Kieler Straße and the Villenweg keeps its villas in the country-house style. Kopperpahl, its second old village, grew around the Eckernförder Chaussee, where many multi-storey tenements went up around 1900, and the Kopperpahler Allee, laid out from 1911, joins it to Kronshagen.

The town hall, opened in 2000 on the site of the old fire station, stands with the Bürgerhaus, a hall for up to 500 people, on the Kopperpahler Allee. Family homes on garden plots dominate Kronshagen; the older plots around the Wildhof, the Vogteiweg and the Volbehrstraße are very large, often with old trees, while new housing went up after the war on the Heischberg and the Domäne. High-rise blocks stand mainly in the northeast.

Businesses gather along the Eckernförder Straße and the Eichkoppelweg.

About Kronshagen

Kronshagen is a garden town laid out from 1910.

What is Kronshagen known for?

Its villas along the Kieler Straße and the Villenweg mostly follow plans by Carl Mannhardt. The Eichhof Park Cemetery, on the municipal boundary, is the largest cemetery in Schleswig-Holstein, and the NDR runs a transmitter in Kronshagen whose tallest mast stands 191 metres high.

What are the main landmarks in Kronshagen?

The Eichhof Park Cemetery in Kronshagen opened in 1900, and its chapel, the Kapelle Parkfriedhof Eichhof, is a listed monument, as are the Mausoleum Milberg, the Mausoleum Martius and the mausoleum of Friedrich von Esmarch inside the grounds. At least 1,259 forced labourers and victims of the camps and of Nazi justice are buried there. The Brüder-Grimm-Schule of 1912, built to plans by Johann Garleff, and the terraced houses of the Wohnhauskolonie Hasselkamp/Friedenskamp, with Arnold Bruhn as architect, are protected too.

The Christuskirche dates from 1961.

What is the history of Kronshagen?

Kronshagen is first recorded on 23 March 1271. Until 1452 the villages of its estate belonged to a monastery in Kiel, and the mayor and council of Kiel ran its holdings. In 1572 they were leased to Duke Adolf of Gottorp, who joined them into the Meierhof Kronshagen.

After long disputes between the city and the ducal house, Duke Christian Albrecht made Kiel cede all these villages under the Permutationskontrakt of 12 December 1667; Kiel was granted 1,000 Reichstaler a year in compensation, a payment that continues. In 1768 Caspar von Saldern divided the estate into plots, the villages of Kopperpahl, Kronshagen and Hasseldieksdamm were laid out anew, and the Amt Kronshagen governed them until 1867. The municipal assembly first met in 1884.

Neighbouring villages such as Russee, Suchsdorf and Hassee became quarters of Kiel, but Kronshagen stayed independent. It came through the Second World War largely spared by bombing, though 230 of its citizens died and the British occupiers requisitioned many houses after it. In 1965 a boundary treaty gave Kiel land for its new Mettenhof quarter in exchange for other areas.

Where is Kronshagen?

Kronshagen belongs to the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands. The Heischberg, its highest point, is a kame, a hill of sorted sand laid down by a meltwater stream at the mouth of a glacier. Unlike Kiel, Kronshagen was not reached by the last advances of the ice, which stopped a few kilometres away.

The municipality lies about 23 kilometres southeast of Eckernförde.

What is Kronshagen like?

TSV Kronshagen ranked among the best women's table tennis teams in Germany in the late 1970s and early 1980s, winning the German cup in 1979/80 and the national team title in 1979 and 1983. The music school of Kronshagen has taught classical, jazz and popular music since 2008. Kronshagen is twinned with Güstrow.

What is the climate of Kronshagen?

On the wider scale, Kronshagen belongs to the transitional oceanic climate. Rainfall is moderate, and the year is cool on average. Winds blow mainly from the southwest to the west, or from the east, and are moderate in strength on average.

Dense building lowers the wind within the settled area.

How do you get to Kronshagen?

The Kronshagen stop on the Kieler Straße, reopened on 14 December 2014, has Nordbahn regional trains on the line between Kiel and Eckernförde. Buses of the Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft and Autokraft serve the municipality. The B76 runs east of Kronshagen.

The B503 branches off it to the northeast, and the A215 and the A210 lie to the south.
