Where to stay in La Libertad
Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.
Beds are thin on this hillside, so the practical base for a trip up to the Cima de la Libertad is down in Quito itself. Height is what La Libertad has instead. The barrio of Nueva Aurora Alta stands above the roofline of the Centro Histórico, and Avenida de los Libertadores carries the climb up from the valley floor.
Choose the parish if you want the slope and the view back over the city rather than a doorstep in the old town, and count on a taxi or a bus for anything after dark.

About La Libertad
What are the main landmarks in La Libertad?
The Templo de la Patria stands at the top of Avenida de los Libertadores, a semi-buried concrete monument whose eleven porticos step down the slope. Milton Barragán designed it. Five halls inside run through the history of Ecuador, and Eduardo Kingman's mural Canto a la Rebeldía covers an outer wall.
The building marks the Cima de la Libertad, the hill above the Centro Histórico where the fighting of 1822 ended.
What is the history of La Libertad?
Antonio José de Sucre led the patriot column up this slope on 24 May 1822 and broke the royalist line under Melchor Aymerich, and Quito capitulated the following day. The parish keeps the date. An obelisk went up on the ground for the centenary in 1922, the army's engineers began building on the site in 1975, and the Templo de la Patria opened on the anniversary in 1982.
La Libertad is one of the 32 urban parishes of Quito.
Where is La Libertad?
La Libertad runs west from the Centro Histórico of Quito up the Pichincha slope, with San Juan on its northern edge and Chilibulo wrapping the south and west.
