About El Balón

Where to stay in El Balón
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
El Balón is a residential and university corner of Cádiz rather than a hotel quarter, so most visitors book a few streets away and walk in. El Mentidero begins across Calle Sacramento. The streets around Plaza de Falla hold the nearest run of rooms, while La Viña sits just over Calle Rosa toward La Caleta. Choose El Balón itself if you want the Atlantic at the end of the street, the Castillo de Santa Catalina five minutes off, and quiet after dark.
About El Balón
What are the main landmarks in El Balón?
El Balón keeps its landmarks at the water's edge. The Castillo de Santa Catalina stands on a mole at the north end of La Caleta, a star-pointed fort ordered by Felipe II in 1597 and drawn by the engineer Cristóbal de Rojas. Calle Antonio Burgos runs to its gate.
The Baluarte del Bonete holds the sea wall just north of it, and the equestrian statue of Simón Bolívar stands on the Glorieta Simón Bolívar off Avenida Duque de Nájera. The 1926 Balneario de Nuestra Señora de la Palma y del Real, out over the sand on stilts, belongs to La Viña across Calle Rosa.
What is the history of El Balón?
El Balón was laid out to a design by Torcuato Benjumeda at the end of the 18th century, on ground that had held military powder magazines. Benjumeda, born at El Puerto de Santa María in 1757, had taken over as master of works from his godfather Torcuato Cayón in 1781. He was twenty-four.
He served as first architect of Cádiz until his death in 1836, and the barrio kept building into the 19th century. Its seaward defence is older: Felipe II ordered the Castillo de Santa Catalina after the sack of 1596, Carlos III made it a military prison in 1769, and the military held it until 1991.
Where is El Balón?
El Balón fills the north-west corner of the Cádiz peninsula, held between Calle Rosa toward La Viña, Calle Sacramento toward El Mentidero, and the Atlantic.
