Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
El Pópulo is the oldest barrio of the Cádiz old town, a small quadrangle of narrow streets inside the line of the medieval wall. Three medieval gates open into it. The railway terminus on Plaza de Sevilla stands a short walk east through Plaza de San Juan de Dios, and the port berths lie the same way, so arriving here on foot with luggage is straightforward.
It suits you if the Roman theatre and the Arco de la Rosa outside the door matter more than sand, since the Atlantic at La Caleta is fifteen minutes west on foot.

What are the main landmarks in El Pópulo?
Under El Pópulo runs the Roman Theatre of Cádiz, raised at Gades and the oldest known theatre on the Iberian Peninsula, its cavea 118 metres across. Excavators struck it in 1980. An interpretation centre reaches the galleries from Calle Mesón, at numbers 11 to 13.
Three arches of the medieval villa still stand: the Arco del Pópulo toward the port, the Arco de la Rosa onto Plaza de la Catedral, and the Arco de los Blanco over Calle San Juan de Dios. The Casa del Almirante stands on Plazuela de San Martín, its portal cut from red and white Genoa marble for the family of Diego de Barrios, an admiral of the Flota de Indias.
What is the history of El Pópulo?
El Pópulo is the medieval villa of Cádiz, the walled core from which the rest of the city grew. Alfonso X took the town in the thirteenth century and enlarged the Muslim fortress standing over the ruined Roman theatre into the Castillo de la Villa. Nothing of that castle survives.
It stood at the south-east corner of the quadrangle, on ground that eighteenth-century levelling work cut down. The barrio owes its name to an image of the Virgin raised over the sea gate in 1587, whose Latin invocation asked her to pray for the people. The Earl of Essex sacked the city in 1596.
Where is El Pópulo?
El Pópulo is a small quadrangle in the Cádiz old town, between the barrio of San Juan to the west and Santa María to the east. Plaza de San Juan de Dios closes it on the port side.
