Puntales is a residential bayside quarter of Cádiz, and staying there trades walking distance for water. The old town lies three and a half kilometres northwest, so a bed here means a bus along Avenida de la Ilustración or the walk southwest to Estadio station on the Cercanías line. Route 3 ends in the barrio.
Streets off Plaza San Lorenzo del Puntal run down to the shore, with Puerto Real and its shipyards on the far side of the water. Choose Puntales if you want cranes on the skyline and a bus into town.

What are the main landmarks in Puntales?
The Castillo de San Lorenzo del Puntal closes the eastern tip of Puntales, and the Spanish Navy still holds it. The fort went up on the point in the sixteenth century, and it now stands inside the Estación Naval de Puntales with its address on Calle Bajeles and no public access. Above it rises the Torre de Puntales, the Cádiz half of the Pilones de Cádiz, a 132 kV crossing of the bay.
The mast was finished in 1960. Its twin stands across the water at Matagorda, two kilometres off on the Puerto Real shore. In the housing grid the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes faces Plaza San Lorenzo del Puntal.
What is the history of Puntales?
Puntales grew out of a garrison rather than a street plan. A gun tower stood there by 1588. In 1596 an Anglo-Dutch fleet took the point and sacked Cádiz in a fifteen-day occupation, and Felipe II answered two years later by ordering a proper fortress, laid out by the military engineer Cristóbal de Rojas.
The Siege of Cádiz, which ran from 1810 to 1812, put the guns back on the narrows, crossing fire with the fort at Matagorda on the far shore. Work built the rest of the barrio: the Varadero de Vilela mended small craft opposite the naval gate, and the bayside gardens on the point still carry its name.
