El Mentidero is the quiet northwest end of the walled city, a grid of eighteenth-century housing between Plaza del Mentidero and the sea wall at Paseo Carlos III. Guesthouses and apartments are folded into the housing on lanes such as Calle Hércules. The sea wall lies 200 metres north.
Plaza Fragela and the Gran Teatro Falla are a few minutes away on foot, and the barrio suits travellers who want the old town within walking distance and streets that empty once the theatre does.

About El Mentidero
What are the main landmarks in El Mentidero?
El Mentidero's landmarks stand around Plaza Fragela, where the Gran Teatro Falla faces the Casa de Fragela across the square. The theatre opened on 12 January 1910. Its neo-Mudéjar front is red brick, cut by three horseshoe-arch doorways, and the stage behind them runs 18 metres wide.
Juan Clat paid for the Casa de Fragela in the first half of the eighteenth century and gave it over to widows without means. The Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Cádiz closes the same square, the Real Academia de Medicina y Cirugía de Cádiz sits on its fourth floor, and the Monumento a Cayetano del Toro stands before the main door.
What is the history of El Mentidero?
El Mentidero was market gardens until Cádiz projected streets across it in the middle of the eighteenth century. Plaza del Mentidero was finished around 1773. It became the axis of a quarter built to close the gap between the Carlos III barracks and Plaza de San Antonio, and a humilladero raised on it by the Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de la Expiración came to be called the Cruz de la Verdad.
Idle men met at that cross to pass on rumours, which is how the barrio got its name. Pedro Virgili had bought ground here on 22 April 1749 for the physic garden of the Real Colegio de Cirugía.
Where is El Mentidero?
El Mentidero holds the northwest corner of the Cádiz peninsula. Calle de la Torre and Calle San José close it to the east, Calle Sacramento divides it from El Balón to the south, and the sea wall along Paseo Carlos III runs above the water to the north. Calle de la Torre carries the name of the bell tower of the church on Plaza de San Antonio.
