Where to stay in El Plantinar

Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.

El Plantinar is a place people live in rather than visit, and that is exactly its use to a traveller: cheap flats, quiet streets, and the old city close enough to reach without paying old-city prices. Students take most of the shared rooms; older married couples hold the rest. The barrio sits within walking distance of the Universidad de Sevilla's Ramón y Cajal campus, with the Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales about 350 metres north of its centre point and the Facultad de Derecho about 550 metres west, in Giralda Sur.

Plaza del Aljarafe has the shops. Expect flats rather than hotels, and count on a walk into Nervión or a short ride from San Bernardo for the cathedral end of Sevilla.

About El Plantinar

What are the main landmarks in El Plantinar?

The Parroquia de San Diego de Alcalá is the one entry El Plantinar's own record files under places of interest, and the church carries more than a line: it has been the canonical seat of the Hermandad del Sol since the brotherhood came here, and its sacramental chapel was blessed in October 2010 after nine months of work. The Banda de Cornetas y Tambores Nuestra Señora del Sol is based in the same building. Plaza del Aljarafe is the other anchor.

That square carries the barrio's handful of shops, and the Parque Media Lunita, which the record sets between El Plantinar and El Juncal-Híspalis rather than squarely in either, is the nearest green space, ringed by the CEIP Aníbal González and a secondary school. No Metro de Sevilla station stands inside those four roads. San Bernardo is the nearest, about 750 metres northwest of the barrio's centre point, beside the Cercanías stop of the same name.

What is the history of El Plantinar?

Housing came first here, and a charter never did: the flats that fill El Plantinar went up in the 1960s and 1970s, three and four storeys at a time, on ground the Distrito Sur had not yet finished absorbing. The Hermandad del Sol traces itself to 1932 and a group of pupils at a Jesuit school on calle Pajaritos, spent the post-war decades in Los Remedios, and moved to El Plantinar in 1989; it became a hermandad de gloria in 1995, a penitential brotherhood in 2006, and made its first station of penance in 2007. Sevilla only saw it in Semana Santa from 2010, on Sábado Santo.

Older by a generation is the Banda de Cornetas y Tambores Nuestra Señora del Sol, founded in 1975 and based in the barrio's church, which in 1986 revived the Lágrimas de San Pedro played from the Giralda every 29 June, a custom of 1403 that had lapsed since 1961. Aníbal González died in 1929. The barrio's primary school carries the name of that Sevilla architect, who directed the Ibero-American Exposition works from 1911 to 1926 and was long dead before the first of these blocks went up.

Where is El Plantinar?

Four roads draw El Plantinar. Avenida de Ramón y Cajal closes it to the north, Calle Urbión to the east, Avenida Alcalde Juan Fernández to the south and Calle Avión Cuatro Vientos to the west, which sets the barrio at the top of the Distrito Sur rather than in the district's own middle. Giralda Sur starts past the western kerb, El Juncal-Híspalis past the eastern. La Buhaira and Nervión take over to the north, Felipe II-Los Diez Mandamientos to the south.

Plaza del Aljarafe holds the centre, and what little retail El Plantinar has is packed around it.
