Pontmajor, Girona — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Segmental brick arches front the old Destil·leries Regàs on Carrer del Pont Major, the spine of Pontmajor, a barri of Girona beside the Ter.

About Pontmajor

Where to stay in Pontmajor

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Pontmajor is a residential barri rather than a lodging district, so beds sit south in Girona or over the Ter in Sarrià de Ter. Carrer del Pont Major is the whole of it. The Centre Cívic fills the former Destil·leries Regàs, sharing its block with the Biblioteca Just M. Casero on the Plaça de l'Om, and the barri keeps its own school, football ground, and sports hall.

Stay here for the Ter bank and an ordinary Catalan street.

About Pontmajor

What are the main landmarks in Pontmajor?

Carrer del Pont Major carries almost every protected building in Pontmajor. The Destil·leries Regàs went up in 1908 behind a brick front of five segmental arches, and Enric Catà designed the Casa Regàs lower down the same street. La Pietat keeps blocked windows dated 1572 and a nave inscription of 1582, with a flood mark of 1617 cut into the façade.

Its clock dates from 1926. The Cases entremitgeres del XVI-XVII al Pont Major run in a terrace along the same street. Destil·leries Gerunda faces Passeig de Sant Joan Bosco.

The Pont de l'Aigua crosses the Ter at the north end and gives the barri its name.

What is the history of Pontmajor?

Pontmajor began as a bridgehead on the Via Augusta, the only crossing to and from France, and the barri grew along the road that used it. Until the Primo de Rivera years the carretera de França still ran through Pedret and Pontmajor. Smiths, cartwrights, innkeepers, and basket makers worked the roadside, and alcohol distilling took over the trade in the nineteenth century.

The Regàs family arrived in 1870. Sant Daniel, a separate municipality until 1963, long lay between the barri and the rest of Girona, which left Pontmajor cut off from the city it belonged to.

Where is Pontmajor?

Pontmajor lies between the Ter and the Montjuïc hill in northern Girona, running on from Pedret and ending downstream where Campdorà begins.
