The beach is what fills the rooms. Playa de la Malvarrosa is among the most visited places in Valencia and draws heavily in summer, with fine sand, a Blue Flag and a promenade running more than a kilometre. The barrio behind it is not a resort.
La Malva-rosa is a working quarter about seven kilometres from the city centre, which is a different proposition from the seafront it fronts. Cabañal and Las Arenas lie along the same shore.

What are the main landmarks in La Malva-Rosa?
A French botanist gave the barrio its name and its growth. Jean Felix Robillard Closier arrived and the place grew around the rose mallow, malvas rosáceas, that used to cover the ground and gave both barrio and beach their name. He also built along the seafront.
Early in the 20th century the architect Robillard began a project of housing near the Paseo Marítimo in a baroque manner that kept the classical feel of the period. A painter made the beach famous. Joaquín Sorolla painted it repeatedly, working outdoors on scenes of life and nature.
What is the history of La Malva-Rosa?
Market gardens and fishermen's huts came first. Until 1848 the ground around what became La Malvarrosa carried huertas and barracas, about seven kilometres from the centre of Valencia. A botanist changed that.
Jean Felix Robillard Closier arrived and the barrio grew, taking its name from the rose mallow that had covered the area. Fishing families built the housing. Homes went up for people living from the sea because the ground lay so close to the Mediterranean.
Architecture followed at the turn of the century. Robillard began building houses near the Paseo Marítimo early in the 20th century in a baroque style that kept the classical character of the time. The name spread further than it should.
It properly belongs to the barrio and its beach, but is sometimes extended in error to the Cabañal and Las Arenas beaches as well.
