Rönö is housing, not hotels. The island holds detached, semi-detached and terraced houses and nothing resembling a hotel front, so a traveller drawn to Väinölänniemi and the water of Lake Kallavesi books in Kuopio proper and crosses the bridge. Kuopio Market Square is the practical base. Saaristokaupunki, the other sought-after address in the city, stands in the same relation to a visitor: residential ground rather than a bed.

Rönö carries no founding year. What the record fixes instead is 1988, the year a bridge joined the island to Väinölänniemi and ended its separation from the rest of Kuopio, after which detached, semi-detached and terraced houses filled most of the ground. Building continued in stages.
A few plots were left undeveloped, and the city council once put tenant houses on the highest point of the island.
