Where to stay in Kalasatama
The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.
Kalasatama is a redeveloping seafront quarter, part of the Sörnäinen district just north of the coastal centre of Helsinki, where new towers meet the old freight harbour and the metro runs straight in. You stay here for the water and the easy line downtown. Hakaniemi lies a short walk south toward the centre.
The Isoisänsilta bridge crosses east to the island of Mustikkamaa, and Itäväylä carries traffic on toward East Helsinki.
About Kalasatama
What are the main landmarks in Kalasatama?
The set pieces are new and watery. The Isoisänsilta pedestrian and cycling bridge reaches east from Kalasatama to the island of Mustikkamaa, with the zoo island of Korkeasaari and the suburb of Kulosaari beyond it. On land, the Elävän kuvan museo and the cast figures of Tannerin portti mark the quarter, while Itäväylä runs past on its way out to East Helsinki.
The sea edges the whole eastern side.
What is the history of Kalasatama?
This was a working harbour first. The shore north of the centre served Helsinki as a freight port, part of the Sörnäinen district near Hakaniemi, before the cargo trade moved on and the rails were pulled back. Redevelopment then raised towers on the cleared ground.
The Isoisänsilta bridge opened to carry walkers and cyclists east to Mustikkamaa, knitting Kalasatama to the islands of Korkeasaari and Kulosaari as the new quarter took the place of the old docks.
Where is Kalasatama?
Kalasatama lies in eastern Helsinki, in southern Finland, on the shore a little north of the coastal centre, officially part of the Sörnäinen district near Hakaniemi, its eastern side on the sea where the Isoisänsilta bridge crosses to Mustikkamaa and Itäväylä runs out toward East Helsinki.
