The Kallion kirkko crowns the rise above Sörnäinen, the granite church that marks this corner of southern Helsinki. It sets the skyline. The Helsingin urheilutalo holds the district's old sports hall, the timber Ruiskumestarin talo keeps one of the city's oldest wooden houses, and the Saalem-temppeli stands among the apartment streets, while Torielämää Hakaniemessä records the market life that has long run through the quarter.

Sörnäinen grew up as the harbour-and-workshop edge of Helsinki, a district of docks, depots and tenements that drew labouring families to the southern Finnish capital. Work defined it. The wooden Ruiskumestarin talo survives from that older, smaller town, and the Hakaniemi market took root as the trading heart of the quarter, the scene the Torielämää Hakaniemessä memorial recalls.

As the city built upward the Kallion kirkko rose over the slope and the Helsingin urheilutalo brought sport to the workers, while neighbouring Kallio and Hermanni filled with the same dense housing. Sörnäinen settled into its part as a working district of Helsinki.

Sörnäinen sits on the harbour side of southern Helsinki, its market streets and apartment blocks running from the Hakaniemi square up the slope toward the Kallion kirkko, with Kallio and Vallila inland.
