Where to stay in Kamppi

The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.

Kamppi is the place to base yourself. The district sits at the centre of Helsinki, with Helsingin päärautatieasema, the bus terminal and the metro all within reach, so it suits first-time visitors who want everything on foot. Hotels cluster thickly here.

Hotelli Torni rises over the streets as a fixed landmark, and Esplanadin puisto runs east into the shopping core toward Punavuori.

About Kamppi

What are the main landmarks in Kamppi?

The landmarks come thick here. Temppeliaukion kirkko, cut into solid rock, draws visitors to the northern edge of Kamppi, while Helsingin päärautatieasema marks the eastern boundary as the city's great gateway. Modern art holds its own ground: Nykytaiteen museo Kiasma stands beside the station, and Amos Rex hides its galleries under the square nearby.

Esplanadin puisto threads green through the centre. Hotelli Torni rises above the lot.

What is the history of Kamppi?

Kamppi began as the city's western field. Long a parade and barracks ground on the edge of old Helsinki, it filled in as the centre grew and the railway arrived, with Helsingin päärautatieasema fixing the eastern side. Temppeliaukion kirkko was later carved into the bedrock to the north.

Between the wars Hotelli Torni rose above the rooftops as a landmark of the modern city, and over the decades the district hardened into the transport core, linking out to Etu-Töölö and Punavuori.

Where is Kamppi?

Kamppi occupies the south-western core of Helsinki, in southern Finland, the busy ground just west of the central station, with Etu-Töölö to the north and Punavuori running south toward the shore.
