What is the history of Etu-Töölö?
Etu-Töölö grew from manor land on the south-western side of Helsinki, its open ground giving way to the apartment blocks and institutions of the expanding capital of southern Finland. The villas came first. The Hakasalmen huvila survives from that earlier estate era, and the Suomen kansallismuseo went up to house the young nation's collections as Helsinki built outward.
Later the Temppeliaukion kirkko was carved into the rock, the Sibelius-monumentti was raised in its park, and the Tennispalatsi brought sport and cinema, while neighbouring Taka-Töölö filled with the same grand streets. Etu-Töölö settled into its part as the museum quarter of the city.
