What are the main landmarks in Pakila?
Pakila keeps things plain. Its one notable building is the Hyvän Paimenen kirkko, a parish church that gathers the surrounding houses. There are no museums or monuments here.
The district's reference points are its neighbours instead: Oulunkylä to the east, Paloheinä and Tuomarinkylä climbing the higher ground to the north, and Maunula across the western boundary. What Pakila offers is the green grain of outer Helsinki, where low houses and gardens stand in for the stone blocks of the city's centre.
What is the history of Pakila?
Pakila began as land beyond the old city. For a long time it stayed rural ground on the northern fringe of Helsinki, settled with small wooden houses on garden plots rather than apartment blocks. The pattern stuck.
As the city pushed north toward Oulunkylä, Paloheinä, and Tuomarinkylä, Pakila kept its low-built character, a detached-house district that filled in slowly while the Hyvän Paimenen kirkko rose to serve the growing parish. That mix of houses and green still sets the district apart from the denser inner quarters of Helsinki.
Where is Pakila?
Pakila lies in northern Helsinki in southern Finland, a low-lying residential district with Oulunkylä to the east, Maunula to the west, and Paloheinä and Tuomarinkylä on the higher ground to the north.
