Vallila, Helsinki — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Vallila keeps few big sights. The brick Paavalin kirkko towers over the district, its tall spire visible across the rooftops, and sport has a long home here at the indoor arena of the Helsingin urheilutalo. The Työläisäiti statue remembers the working mothers of this once-industrial quarter.

Just south, in Alppiharju, the Linnanmäki fairground spins its old Vuoristorata wooden coaster within easy sight of Vallila, tying the district to one of the most loved amusement parks in all of Helsinki.

Vallila grew up as a workers' district. From the 1910s onward it filled with timber houses, workshops, and small factories, earning the working-class name it has kept ever since. Industry stayed.

Unlike most of central Helsinki, Vallila held on to a real working area and a crowd of workshop businesses through the decades to the 1980s. In the years since, people from artistic trades have moved into the old premises, and the Paavalin kirkko and the Työläisäiti memorial still recall the labouring roots that the district shares with neighbouring Pasila and Alppiharju.

Vallila lies in northern Helsinki in southern Finland, a central-northern district bordered by Pasila to the west and Alppiharju to the south, with the Linnanmäki fairground just over its southern edge.
