Where to stay in Taka-Töölö
The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.
Taka-Töölö makes a strong central base in Helsinki, walkable to the sights and quieter than the harbour core. Trams run everywhere. A room here puts the Rock Church of Temppeliaukion kirkko, the Sibelius-monumentti, and the national museum of Suomen kansallismuseo on foot, with Linnanmäki and the Olympic Stadium tower close by.
Who it suits: you want a handsome residential quarter within reach of Helsinki's headline sights, trading the waterfront for tree-lined streets near Töölön kirkko and the Töölön kisahalli.
About Taka-Töölö
What are the main landmarks in Taka-Töölö?
Few districts hold so many. The Rock Church of Temppeliaukion kirkko, hewn into bedrock, draws crowds, while the amusement park of Linnanmäki, the Sibelius-monumentti in its waterside park, and the national collection of Suomen kansallismuseo each pull their own, and the tower of Helsingin olympiastadionin torni gives the long view over the city. Töölön kirkko and Kristuskyrkan serve their congregations.
The villa of Hakasalmen huvila, the tram museum of Ratikkamuseo, the art home of Taidekoti Kirpilä, and the Töölön kisahalli sports hall round out the quarter.
What is the history of Taka-Töölö?
Taka-Töölö grew as Helsinki spread north from the old centre. Building came in waves. The district filled with stone apartment houses through the early twentieth century, and grand public works followed, among them the national collection of Suomen kansallismuseo, the modernist Töölön kirkko, and the amusement park of Linnanmäki on its hilltop above the streets.
The Rock Church of Temppeliaukion kirkko was blasted from bedrock later. Sport left the Olympic Stadium tower nearby.
Where is Taka-Töölö?
Taka-Töölö lies in south-western Helsinki, close to the heart of the city. Trams cross it. The district sits north of the centre between Etu-Töölö, Meilahti, and Ruskeasuo, a dense and well-built quarter where the Sibelius-monumentti stands in its park and the amusement park of Linnanmäki rises on the high ground.
Bedrock holds the Rock Church. Over it all rises the Olympic Stadium tower.
