Where to stay in Alppiharju
The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.
Alppiharju mixes fairground and city. The district runs to apartment streets in Harju and the hilltop park in Alppila rather than a hotel strip, so most visitors stay in central Helsinki and walk up the slope. You get a lively footing near the rides yet close to the centre.
Linnanmäki crowns the hill. Kallio lies just downhill to the south with its bars and tram lines.
About Alppiharju
What are the main landmarks in Alppiharju?
The hilltop park sets the scene. Linnanmäki crowns Alppiharju, and its rides have become district landmarks: the wooden coaster Vuoristorata and the spinning Kirnu pull crowds up the slope. Below the park, Alppilan kirkko and Paavalin kirkko give the Harju and Alppila streets their parish markers.
The Ratikkamuseo keeps the city's old trams nearby. Together they range from screaming descents to quiet naves across northern Helsinki.
What is the history of Alppiharju?
The district took shape around its hill. As Helsinki grew north, the Harju and Alppila quarters filled in with workers' housing, and the open rise became a park. Linnanmäki opened on the hilltop and drew crowds for generations.
Paavalin kirkko and Alppilan kirkko marked the parish among the new blocks. The district settled between Kallio to the south and Vallila to the east, a northern shoulder of the central city.
Where is Alppiharju?
Alppiharju rises on the northern side of central Helsinki, in southern Finland, a compact district of two quarters bordered by Kallio to the south, Taka-Töölö to the west and Vallila to the east.
