La Roche-sur-Yon was born of a war and an emperor. The Vendée had risen against the Revolution in a fierce and bloody uprising, and after the royalist armies were crushed the land lay ruined and hard to govern. Napoleon ordered a new town built.
In 1804 he chose this small place at the heart of the Vendée for a new prefecture, and engineers laid out a whole town on a five-sided plan around a vast parade square. The town changed its name with its rulers. It was called Napoléon, then Bourbon under the kings, then Napoléon again, before it settled back to the old name of La Roche-sur-Yon.
The plan stayed straight and calm. Its long straight streets and its great central square kept the ordered look the planners drew, unlike the tangled old towns of the land. The huge square still holds the emperor's statue.
