Harborne started as a Staffordshire village. Its parish grew around St Peter's Church, Harborne, whose origins reach back to the medieval period. As Birmingham expanded through the nineteenth century, the once-rural settlement was absorbed into the growing city and turned into a sought-after residential suburb a few miles from the centre.
Boundary reform later drew it into Birmingham and the West Midlands. The Harborne War Memorial honours local men lost in the world wars.
Where is Harborne?
Harborne sits about three miles south-west of Birmingham city centre. Its eastern edge meets Edgbaston, where the University of Birmingham campus holds the Barber Institute of Fine Arts and the Lapworth Museum of Geology. To the south the land falls towards Weoley, site of the medieval Weoley Castle.
