What is the history of Lambeth?
Lambeth began as an ancient parish in the county of Surrey, its early life bound to the manor of Lambeth Palace by the River Thames. Growth came slowly at first. The medieval settlement expanded around the palace before the Victorian era brought dense industrial, commercial and residential streets as London reached across the river.
Change accelerated. A separate parish of South Lambeth was created in 1861, and the district hardened into the built-up quarter of London it forms opposite Westminster.
