What is the history of Westbourne?
The hamlet grew up in the High Middle Ages around Westbourne Green. It is recorded as Westeburn in 1222. Its manor was distinct from Paddington's but, lacking a church, paid tithes to Paddington parish.
In 1746 the green had five main houses. The largest, Westbourne Place, was rebuilt in 1745 by Isaac Ware and later housed Lord Hill, Commander-in-Chief of the Army; after he left in 1836 it gave way to Westbourne Park Villas, where Thomas Hardy lived from 1863 to 1867.
