Where to stay in Hartley
Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.
Hartley is a settled residential suburb rather than a visitor's quarter. Tavistock Road carries traffic south to Mutley and the city centre, and north to the A38 Plymouth Parkway, part of the Devon Expressway that links Exeter to the motorway network. Substantial Victorian villas line much of the road.
About Hartley
What are the main landmarks in Hartley?
Hartley has a nonconformist church and a large branch of Morrisons. Plymouth Croquet Club plays beside Hartley Park. The small independent King's School is here too, and the Golden Hind at Manadon Roundabout is the main place to go out in the evening.
What is the history of Hartley?
The former Plymouth Workhouse stood at the junction of Tor Lane and Tavistock Road. It is now a gated retirement community. Much of Hartley went up just before the Second War, the Venn Estate in particular, though the Victorian villas along Tavistock Road are older.
Where is Hartley?
Hartley stands on higher ground than most of Plymouth. The view runs south to the sea, east into the South Hams, north over Dartmoor, and west towards Cornwall. Tavistock Road bisects the suburb.
