About A Kung Ngam

Where to stay in A Kung Ngam
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Beds sit west of A Kung Ngam, in Shau Kei Wan proper rather than beside the fish terminal market. Two draws sit within walking reach: the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence at the seaward end, and the Sai Wan Ho Sports Centre along the shore. Nights are quiet.
Temples and the fish terminal market still set the rhythm of these streets, so the area suits a traveller who would rather sleep beside a working waterfront than in the heart of Hong Kong.
About A Kung Ngam
What are the main landmarks in A Kung Ngam?
The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence stands at the seaward edge of A Kung Ngam, and it is the sight that draws most visitors out to this end of Shau Kei Wan. A fish terminal market occupies the waterfront. Several temples stand in the streets behind it.
Public sport is well provided for nearby, with the Sai Wan Ho Sports Centre, the Island East Sports Centre and the Quarry Bay Sports Centre all within a short ride of A Kung Ngam. The Chai Wan Sports Centre and the Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre extend the same run of public halls.
What is the history of A Kung Ngam?
A Kung Ngam began as a village, and the name still covers both the old settlement and the wider area that grew around it in the north-east of Shau Kei Wan. The fish terminal market carries that older trade forward. Coastal defence marks the other strand of the past, gathered in the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence at the edge of the area.
Several temples remain. Shau Kei Wan grew around it, and A Kung Ngam kept its own name at the water's edge.
Where is A Kung Ngam?
A Kung Ngam holds the north-eastern corner of Shau Kei Wan, on the seaward edge of Hong Kong Island.
