What are the main landmarks in Bowrington?

Villain hitting made this bridge famous. Practitioners gathered under the flyover beside the bus stop after it was built, and the spot became the most concentrated place for the custom in Hong Kong, filling every year at the waking of insects. A market carries the old name.

The Bowrington Road Market opened between the flyover and Bowrington Road in 1979, replacing the first market that the flyover works had displaced, and the Bowrington Road Cooked Food Centre was built at the same time. Banyans once made one of the eight views. The trees along the canal and on Lee Garden Hill were reckoned among the sights of Hong Kong in the early twentieth century.

What is the history of Bowrington?

The ground was the mouth of a stream. Wong Nai Chung reached the sea between Ngo Keng Shan and Leighton Hill, north of what is now Happy Valley. Governor Bowring began the reclamation.

Work in the 1850s pushed the shoreline out to what is now Hennessy Road, the lower course of the stream was rebuilt as an artificial channel and extended to the new shore as the Bowrington Canal, and the reclaimed ground was named Bowring City. The Chinese name came from the shape. The canal was long, narrow and winding like a goose's neck, so it was called the goose stream, the road bridge across its mouth the Goose Neck Bridge, and eventually the whole quarter Ngo Keng.

Administration counted it twice. Bowring City was listed as the eighth yeuk of Victoria City from 1866 and became the ninth in 1888. Trams crossed the bridge from 1904.

Reclamation in Wan Chai between 1922 and 1929 then covered the canal south of the bridge, cut a new open nullah north of it and removed the bridge itself, so the goose stream disappeared and the name stayed.
