What are the main landmarks in Kadoorie Hill?

The hill is its own landmark. Diocesan Boys' School holds the western slope, St George's Mansions marks the high point of the crest, and the plain white houses raised along Kadoorie Avenue and Braga Circuit in the 1930s have kept their lines well enough that Kadoorie Hill answers to the nickname of a little white city. The old China Light and Power headquarters sat at the southeastern foot.

Braga Circuit keeps the name of J. P. Braga, the Macanese figure bound up with the building of urban Kowloon.

What is the history of Kadoorie Hill?

Before the houses this was bare rock, known as 大石鼓, or Tai Shek Ku. The Hong Kong Engineering and Construction Company, funded by the Kadoorie family as a hedge against a slack building trade, was set up in 1922 and took the first parcels here in 1930, some 30 acres of hillside that Sang Lee and Company then cut and re-formed. Survey work began in 1931.

The two roads were named in 1936, and the garden-city houses went up until 1941. Waterloo Road did the rest: the cutting split this crest from the hill that carries Kowloon Hospital, and the western part kept the name Kadoorie Hill.

Where is Kadoorie Hill?

The hill runs between Argyle Street on the south and Prince Edward Road West on the north, with Waterloo Road east and the East Rail line down the western side.
