Where visitors usually base themselves, and why.
Getting in is the whole problem. Kuk Po has no road worth the name, and villagers reach it through the Shek Chung O crossing on a permit, because Sha Tau Kok sits inside the restricted border zone, then by boat across Starling Inlet to the pier at Hoi Ha. Walkers come the other way.
The trail from the school runs to Fung Hang and on through Kai Kuk Shue Ha and Ham Hang Mei to Luk Keng, where there is public transport, and the walk takes forty minutes to three quarters of an hour. Beds are in Fanling and Sheung Shui.

What are the main landmarks in Kuk Po?
Four buildings here are listed Grade III. The Kai Choi School and the Hip Tin Temple stand in Kuk Po, and the Yeung Ancestral Hall and the Li Ancestral Hall stand in Kuk Po Lo Wai, which is the oldest of the villages and was walled in the Hakka manner. Schooling explains one of them.
The school house went up in 1928 on the model of the Guangzhou Military Academy, brought back by Sung Miau On, who had studied there and stayed on as headmaster. Classes ran into the early 1990s. A stall by the school opens on Sundays for the walkers who come down off the Plover Cove trails.
What is the history of Kuk Po?
Kuk Po was emptied by imperial order. The Kangxi Emperor's evacuation of the coast in 1662 moved everyone fifty li inland, a second order pushed them further two years later, and the ban was not lifted until 1669. Cheung families were probably here before that.
They hold much of the land still and live at Fung Hang, which is the villagers' own account of who came first. Seven clans followed the return. The Sung, Lee, Ho, Tsang, Cheng, Ng and Yeung held the area for more than three centuries, farming it and taking fish and shellfish from the inlet.
The villages are mostly deserted, and hill walkers from the Plover Cove Country Park pass through. Eight small villages carry the name, among them Hoi Ha, Tien Sim, Sin Vuk Ha and Kuk Po Lo Wai, some of one clan and some mixed.

Kuk Po holds the south shore of Starling Inlet in the North District of Hong Kong, with Luk Keng and Nam Chung west along the same water, the Plover Cove Country Park behind, and Sha Tau Kok across the inlet.
