The beach here is black sand. That colour is uncommon in Hong Kong, and the beach gave the whole area its name before the name spread to the district around. Swimming is not the point.
There are no lifeguards and no shark net, and the water is poor, but the view is wide enough to reach Macau and Zhuhai on a clear day. Sunsets bring people out from the city.

What are the main landmarks in Lung Kwu Tan?
A Tin Hau temple stands in the village. Villagers say it was built in the early or middle Qing and rebuilt to its present two-hall scale in the Guangxu era, with the last restoration in 1988, and a stele inside records the work. The Lau ancestral hall is listed.
It was graded on 9 January 2007 as a Grade III historic building, built in the late Qing on a two-hall plan with the hill behind it and the sea in front. Dolphins swim off the shore. The Urmston Road is one of the regular haunts of the Chinese white dolphin, and a viewing platform on the small hill north of the beach is the place to watch for them and for the sunset.
What is the history of Lung Kwu Tan?
Settlement here goes back to the late Neolithic. People were living on this shore five or six thousand years ago, and the sand-bar site that records them was first found in April 1989 and dug in rescue excavations before the power station of 1993. The village was founded under Qianlong.
Genealogies the villagers keep date the formal founding to that reign, though the original site is not known, and the present villages moved from Fa Heung Lo about a hundred years ago. An emperor is said to have hidden here. The Sung Wong Tung cave on the Castle Peak trail carries a legend traced to 1277, when the Song court fled south before the Mongols.
Administration followed the British lease. Lung Kwu Tan went into the Yuen Long district when the New Territories were ceded in 1898, and it has belonged to Tuen Mun since the district offices were set up in 1969.

Lung Kwu Tan lies on the western shore of Tuen Mun in the New Territories of Hong Kong, with Castle Peak to the east, the Urmston Road to the west and Tap Shek Kok to the south.
