Most of Shek Lei lives in the towers of Shek Lei Estate, with private flats along Wo Yi Hop Road and workshops and offices packed in around Ta Chuen Ping Street. Shek Lei rents flats, not rooms. Anyone basing here trades a downtown address for quiet evenings under Kam Shan, with the rest of Hong Kong reached by heading down through Kwai Chung and out along Castle Peak Road.

What are the main landmarks in Shek Lei?
Shek Lei Estate dominates the slope, a run of public housing blocks stacked up the hillside and visible from the roads below. Kam Shan takes over above it. Wo Yi Hop Road carries the older private housing below the estate.
Ta Chuen Ping Street holds the workshops and offices, and the industrial buildings run along it. Smugglers Ridge draws the skyline above the estates, while Castle Peak Road runs along the bottom of the slope through Kwai Chung.
What is the history of Shek Lei?
The name has more than one spelling. Shek Lei Pui is the longer variant, and Shek Lei the form that stuck to the hillside above Kwai Chung. Public housing decided how the slope was used: Shek Lei Estate covers the land that gives the neighbourhood its name, and private blocks rose along Wo Yi Hop Road beside it.
Factories and workshops took the flatter land around Ta Chuen Ping Street, and that industrial strip keeps the housing back from Castle Peak Road below. Shek Yam Estate and On Yam Estate followed the contour of the same hillside.
Where is Shek Lei?
Shek Lei sits on the western foothills of Kam Shan and Smugglers Ridge, with Castle Peak Road running below it and Upper Kwai Chung spreading out to the west. Shek Yam Estate and On Yam Estate stand immediately alongside.
