Siu Sai Wan, Hong Kong — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Siu Sai Wan is a residential quarter in the north-eastern part of Hong Kong Island, the eastern end of Chai Wan inside the Eastern District.
About Siu Sai Wan

Where to stay in Siu Sai Wan
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Hotel beds are few here. Siu Sai Wan is housing estates and schools rather than a hotel quarter, so most visitors book over in Chai Wan or further along the Eastern District and ride out for a game at Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre. If you want a plain residential base well away from the crowded centres of Hong Kong Island, the trade is a longer journey in each morning against quiet evenings.
Chai Wan Sports Centre falls within the same short hop.
About Siu Sai Wan
What are the main landmarks in Siu Sai Wan?
Two sports halls anchor the area. Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre carries the neighbourhood's own name, a public indoor venue of the kind that fills with school groups, club bookings and weekend fixtures. Chai Wan Sports Centre stands a short way west in the older half of the district, and between them the two halls cover most of what brings outsiders into this corner of the Eastern District.
Grand monuments are absent. What Siu Sai Wan gives instead is an ordinary Hong Kong housing quarter at close range, walked between estate blocks rather than toured.
What is the history of Siu Sai Wan?
The name marks a part, not a town. Siu Sai Wan came into use for the eastern end of Chai Wan, and the two have been read as one place ever since, the older half and the newer ground built out beyond it. Administration followed the same logic.
Rather than stand alone, the quarter answers to the Eastern District, one of the units Hong Kong uses to divide the island, and its records are kept there. Chai Wan holds the older story. Growth reached this eastern edge afterwards, and Siu Sai Wan reads as the outer chapter of it.
Where is Siu Sai Wan?
Chai Wan continues to the west. Siu Sai Wan takes the eastern end of that ground, on the north-eastern part of Hong Kong Island, inside the Eastern District.
