Wu Kai Sha, Hong Kong — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Wu Kai Sha holds a stretch of the Tolo Harbour shore northwest of Ma On Shan, its name reading as Black Sand Creek after the iron ore.

About Wu Kai Sha

Where to stay in Wu Kai Sha

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Beds are scarce here. Wu Kai Sha reads as a shoreline address rather than a visitor base, and the few travellers who book along it come for the Tolo Harbour water rather than for any run of hotels. Ma On Shan, immediately to the south-east, carries the denser cluster of towers and the everyday shops that go with them.

Sha Tin District holds the wider choice. Anyone weighing a night this far along the harbour should treat the two sports centres as the local anchor rather than any high street.

About Wu Kai Sha

What are the main landmarks in Wu Kai Sha?

Two sports centres carry the public life. Ma On Shan Sports Centre and Heng On Sports Centre are the named civic buildings of Wu Kai Sha, and a shoreline district of this scale rarely gives a visitor much more than that in the way of built attractions. Tolo Harbour supplies what the buildings do not.

Black iron ore once came down from the Ma On Shan peak and settled on this sand, which is the whole of the name Black Sand Creek and the closest thing the shore has to a monument.

What is the history of Wu Kai Sha?

The name came off the sand. Black iron ore washed down from the Ma On Shan peak and gathered along this shore, and the reading of Wu Kai Sha as Black Sand Creek records exactly that, a piece of geology turned into an address. Older spellings survive in print: Wu Kwai Sha and U Kwai Sha both stood for the same stretch of the Tolo Harbour shore before the modern form settled.

Boundaries came later. The shore falls inside the Sha Tin District, one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong, and sits within the New Territories rather than on the older urban ground across the water.

Where is Wu Kai Sha?

Wu Kai Sha runs along the Tolo Harbour shore in the New Territories, northwest of Ma On Shan and inside the Sha Tin District.
