The area's landmarks are mostly churches. Grange Abbey is the one sight that belongs to Donaghmede itself, a roofless stone ruin left from an earlier age. The parish churches of the neighbouring villages ring the district: All Saints' Church and Saint Assam's Church at Raheny, Kilbarrack Lower Church, and Sts Peter and Paul's Church at Baldoyle.
Two curiosities survive on the Belcamp lands, the Washington Memorial Tower and Belcamp College Chapel. Saint Doulagh's Church and Baldoyle Library lie close by.
What is the history of Donaghmede?
Long before its houses went up, this pocket of north Dublin was farmland dotted with churches and a country estate. That estate lay at Belcamp. It has left behind the Washington Memorial Tower and the chapel of Belcamp College, ringed by later building.
Grange Abbey, a ruined church, marks an older layer of settlement, while the surrounding parishes raised their own churches at Raheny and Baldoyle. Residential streets eventually covered the fields between them.
