The closest of the city's museums to the dock is the National Print Museum, a short way to the south. What is the history of Grand Canal Dock?
The district grew up around the Grand Canal Dock, the point where the Grand Canal reaches the River Liffey and the tide. The enclosed basin was built so that canal boats could transfer cargo to and from ships on the river. Cargo once moved through here.
For much of its working life the area was industrial, tied to shipping, warehousing and the canal trade. As that traffic faded the quays fell quiet, and later regeneration of the Dublin Docklands reshaped the water's edge into a quarter of offices and homes.
Where is Grand Canal Dock?
The quarter sits southeast of Dublin's core, hemmed by the River Liffey to the north and the line of the Grand Canal to the south. Its centre is the Grand Canal Dock itself, a large enclosed basin that opens to the river through a set of locks. Quays and pedestrian bridges ring the water.
