Where to stay in Chhatarpur

Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.

Chhatarpur puts its beds where its business is. The Rajmahal and the older buildings around it mark the centre of a town that was once walled on three sides, and the district offices, the market lanes, and the cenotaph of Chhatrasal all fall within one walk of that ground. The errand decides, not the view.

Anyone here for Khajuraho spends the day forty kilometres out and wants a clean bed and an early start, while a visitor with district paperwork wants the offices measured in minutes. Chhatarpur Railway Station opened in 2017 and stands apart from the old core, so an arrival on the Delhi Vande Bharat lands some way from the market. Buses are the older habit.

Services run through the night toward Jhansi, Bhopal, and Delhi, and rooms near the stand answer to that timetable rather than to any holiday season. NH 34 and NH 39 cross in the town, which is what makes Chhatarpur a halt on the Khajuraho run at all, and a bed near that junction spares a driver two crossings of the market lanes in a day. Water shapes the quieter alternatives.

Rao Sagar, Pratap Sagar, and Kishore Sagar are the tanks the town counts as its own, and Rani Talaiya is the best known of the smaller ones, so an address facing water trades minutes from the offices for a calmer evening. Kutni Dam and Panna National Park lie further out. Both are day trips from the city rather than reasons to sleep beyond it, because the rooms of Chhatarpur District concentrate at its seat.

About Chhatarpur

Chhatarpur trades on what surrounds it.

What is Chhatarpur known for?

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments, a world heritage cluster of Hindu and Jain temples, sits about forty kilometres out, and the city's own police unit is the force charged with guarding it. Bageshwar Dham pulls its own crowds to a Hanuman temple twenty-five kilometres off. Granite mining and polishing run through Chhatarpur District, and furniture-making employs a good share of the town.

The offices still matter most.

What are the main landmarks in Chhatarpur?

The cenotaph of Chhatrasal stands in the city itself, raised to the Bundela leader the town was named for. Everything else is a drive. Jatashankar, a cave temple to Shiva, and the Jain temples at Nainagiri sit out in Chhatarpur District, while Bambar Baini crowns a hill at Lavkushnagar.

Hanuman Tauria keeps its temple closer in. The museum at Dhubela is nearest of them all, five kilometres from town.

What is the history of Chhatarpur?

Chhatarpur was founded in 1785 and named for Chhatrasal, the Bundela leader reckoned the founder of Bundelkhand, whose cenotaph the city keeps. Chandela kings had raised Khajuraho and its tanks long before that. His descendants ruled the state until the year of the founding, when the Pawar clan of the Rajputs took control, and the British Raj guaranteed the state to Kunwar Sone Singh Pawar in 1806.

Succession nearly ended the line. In 1854 Chhatarpur would have lapsed to the British government for want of a direct heir under the doctrine of lapse, but it was conferred on Jagat Raj as a special act of grace. The Pawar Rajas then held a princely state inside the Bundelkhand agency of Central India, with the British cantonment of Nowgong within its bounds.

Paper and coarse cutlery were made here in 1901, alongside a high school. Vishvanath Singh carried the title from 1867 to 1932, and Bhawani Singh from 1932 to the end of it. Independence redrew the map.

Chhatarpur acceded to India in 1947 with the rest of Bundelkhand and was folded into the state of Vindhya Pradesh, which merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956. The city has been a district headquarters ever since. Ruined walls near Rajgarh, a short way west, and the tanks the Chandela left behind are the older layer beneath all of it.

Where is Chhatarpur?

The Ken is the river that orders this country, with the Urmil and the Kuturi feeding it and the Dhasan running down the far side of the fertile plain between them. Chhatarpur sits on the outer edge of Madhya Pradesh, sharing a boundary with Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, at an average elevation near 305 metres. The Singhari passes close by the city's eastern side.

Wooded hills rise to the south. Rao Sagar, Pratap Sagar, and Kishore Sagar are the three tanks the town counts as its own.

What is the climate of Chhatarpur?

The monsoon does the work here. Rain arrives over Chhatarpur from June through September and carries most of the year's water, which matters in a drought-affected district that faces a water crisis for farming and for drinking alike. Summers ahead of it are hot.

Winters run cool, and the classification that fits is Cwa, the humid subtropical type, with the monsoon months sitting somewhat cooler than the ones before them.

How do you get to Chhatarpur?

Chhatarpur Railway Station opened in 2017 and reaches Prayagraj, Lucknow, Bhopal, Indore, and Delhi, with the Delhi Vande Bharat passing through. Jhansi and Satna are the bigger railheads, roughly 130 and 140 kilometres out. Roads carry the rest.

NH 34 and NH 39 cross in the town, putting Bhopal about 330 kilometres off and Delhi some 550, with buses working both runs. Khajuraho Airport lies nearest, though its flights are few, and Jabalpur is the larger option.
