What is the history of Jabalpur?
Jabalpur was a seat of the Gond kings. In the days before the Mughals, the Gond people ruled these hills from a fort above the town, and their warrior queen Rani Durgavati defended the land against the armies of the north. The queen fell in battle.
Rani Durgavati died fighting the Mughals rather than yield, and her name is honoured in the city still, on the hill where her fort stands. The British made it a garrison town. Under British rule Jabalpur grew into a cantonment and a railway town in the middle of India, a centre of the country's heart, with barracks, gun factories, and a grid of roads.
