What is the history of Civil Lines?
Civil Lines took shape during the British Raj as housing for senior civilian officers, the Divisional Commissioner, the District Magistrate, and their staff. The colonial administration called it White Town. That name set its bungalows apart from the older, denser quarters where the local population lived.
Such districts were laid out across the subcontinent to one pattern: spacious plots, wide roads, and upkeep that mirrored the rank of the officials who lived there. In Delhi, that plan left the broad avenues and garden compounds still traced in the streets.
Where is Civil Lines?
Civil Lines sits in North Delhi, north of the old walled city and just below the Delhi University campus. Kashmiri Gate anchors its southern edge, and the wooded Ridge, where the Flagstaff Tower and Mutiny Memorial stand, closes it off to the west. Alipur Road threads through the middle, running past the Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial.
The Yamuna lies to the east.
