Shahdara grew up on the east bank of the Yamuna, beyond the old walled city of Delhi. For a long time it stood apart. Reached only by crossing the river, it developed as a separate settlement while the historic core of the capital lay to the west.
As Delhi spread eastward across the Yamuna, the suburb was absorbed into the expanding metropolis and eventually organised as one of the administrative districts of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
