The terminus changes the calculation. Trains stop at Machilīpatnam and go no further, which means arrivals cluster at one point and a room near it saves the awkward end of a long day, though the quiet is better away from the tracks. Anyone who cannot find what they want will reach that larger city sixty kilometres away by road, and many treat Machilīpatnam as a day trip from there rather than a base. Weavers work close by. Europe arrived by sea. From the 16th century Machilīpatnam served as the settlement of European traders, and by the 17th it had become a major trading port worked in turn by the Portuguese, the British, the Dutch and the French. Four flags, one anchorage.
The town carries several names, and Masulipatnam, Masulipatam and Bandar all survive alongside the form in official use. Ancient before all of it, the port town was working long before any European sail appeared off Andhra Pradesh. Missionary work followed the merchants.
The Church Missionary Society keeps a station at Masulipatam, and the town counts as an educational centre as well as a port, which gives it a role beyond the harbour and the looms. Administration sits here too. Machilīpatnam is a municipal corporation and the administrative headquarters of Krishna district, and it also heads Machilīpatnam mandal within Machilīpatnam revenue division.
It is a small fishing town now. What remains of the trading centuries is the harbour, the carpet-weaving that still runs in the town, and a railway that terminates here instead of carrying on down the coast. The names outlasted the trade.

The coast is flat and low. Machilīpatnam sits on the seaward side of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh, where the land runs out into tidal ground and the fishing boats work close in. Vijayawada lies sixty kilometres away.
The tropical band covers the whole of this coast, and the country between the town and the larger city is farmed for rice and oilseed.
