A walk across the enclave takes no time. The enclave covers about 30 square kilometres in total, so the choice of quarter matters less here than the choice of town, and most visitors settle wherever a room turns up in the grid near the market ground. Sleeping options number a handful.
A district of this size supports little in the way of hotels, and the surrounding towns of Andhra Pradesh carry most of the beds within reach of the enclave. Yanam district and the town share the same ground, and the boundary encloses both. Dates count for more than districts here.
January brings the Yanam People's Festival, and the old Tuesday market pulled buyers from well beyond the enclave in the days when foreign goods were the draw, so those weeks stretch what little lodging the town holds. Puducherry itself is not next door. The union territory is discontiguous, and its other districts lie far off, which leaves Andhra Pradesh as the practical hinterland for anyone arriving by road to see French Yanam.
The French inheritance shows in names and habits rather than in any list of monuments, since the enclave keeps no famous building of its own. Frelugu describes the mixture that resulted.

Nearly 200 years is a long tenure for a holding of this size. The enclave never sat far from larger authorities, and its trade depended on being different from the land immediately around it.
Union with India came in 1954. Yanam joined India and became part of Puducherry, the union territory once written Pondicherry, whose districts lie apart from one another, and Andhra Pradesh has ringed the town ever since. The old name survives in speech.
People still say French Yanam, and Frelugu describes the mixture of French and Telugu practice that the long administration produced in this small district. The Yanam People's Festival kept its place in January, the month that once brought the buyers, and the market ground remains the centre of public life in the enclave.

Once in the district, the market streets and the rest of the town lie within a short walk of one another, which is what some 30 square kilometres allows.
