Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The North Koel River gives Medininagar its one real orientation. The city grew along the banks, and the addresses that matter, the municipal corporation, the offices of Palamu district, the divisional desks of Palamu division, stand close enough together that a room anywhere in the built area leaves the lot of them walkable. Choice is narrow but adequate.
A city covering roughly 150 square kilometres with a corporation to run it keeps more beds than the settlements around it, and that is the argument for basing here rather than passing through on the way to somewhere else in Jhārkhand. Past the municipal boundary the calculation changes. Palamu district spreads well beyond the built edge, and rooms out there answer to local business rather than to travel, so a visitor with an appointment in the countryside still does better to sleep in the city and drive out in the morning.
Daltonganj is worth carrying as a second name. Directions, older maps and people who grew up with the British Raj form still use it, and both words point at the same streets on the same river. You want the city itself for Palamu division business or for the North Koel River; anywhere else in the district only for the country around it.

A place on the banks of the North Koel River had reason to exist long before any colonial officer arrived, but 1880 is the year the record fixes for the founding of the settlement that became Medininagar. Renaming closed the colonial chapter. Medininagar replaced Daltonganj as the official form while the older word held on in ordinary speech, so the city answers to both depending on who is speaking.
Administration then grew around it. Palamu district placed its headquarters here, Palamu division added its own, and a subdivision and a block of the same name were drawn around the city as well, which brings four layers of Jhārkhand's structure together inside one municipal corporation. That concentration is unusual.
Roughly 150 square kilometres holding the offices of a district, a division, a subdivision and a block all at once puts more officials at work here than the size of the place suggests, and it is why the streets by the corporation stay busy on a weekday while the river bank does not.

The North Koel River does little to soften the year. A river cannot temper a subtropical inland city the way a coast can, and no sea comes near this part of Jhārkhand, so the swing between the hot months and the cool ones reaches Medininagar undiluted. Timing beats address.
Anyone with business at the Palamu district offices or the Palamu division desks should pick the month with some care, because the gap between seasons here is wider than any difference between one street and the next.
How do you get to Medininagar?
Palamu district roads do the delivering. Medininagar sits at the middle of the district it administers, so routes across Palamu division converge on the city instead of skirting it, and an arrival from elsewhere in Jhārkhand finishes in the same few streets whatever the last leg happened to be. Ask for Daltonganj too.
The older name still serves for the city on the North Koel River, and it will get a traveller here as reliably as the new one.
