What are the main landmarks in Kalyani Nagar?
The Aga Khan Palace stands on the Nagar Road side of Kalyani Nagar, a monument of national importance since 2003. Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III had it built in 1892 in the Indo-Saracenic manner, and Mahatma Gandhi was interned inside it from 1942 until 1944. Kasturba Gandhi died there.
Her marble samadhi sits beside Mahadev Desai's in a walled enclosure in the grounds, and the palace museum runs to six galleries. East Avenue runs the length of the quarter, with Cerebrum IT Park off its eastern side.
What is the history of Kalyani Nagar?
Kalyani Nagar sat inside Vadgaon Sheri before it took a name of its own. Neelkanth Kalyani, an industrialist who founded the Kalyani Forging Company in the early 1960s, was among the first to live on this ground and brought its first electricity and water connections, and the quarter took his surname. He died in Pune in 2013.
The Aga Khan Bridge across the Mula-Mutha later opened the run to Koregaon Park, and offices and software work followed the housing onto the avenues. The Pune Municipal Corporation administers the quarter from its Nagar Road-Wadgaonsheri Ward Office.
Where is Kalyani Nagar?
Kalyani Nagar lies on level ground between Yerawada and Vadgaon Sheri, with the Mula-Mutha cutting its southern edge away from Koregaon Park.
