About Swargate
What are the main landmarks in Swargate?
Swargate marks the end of the old city of Pune, so the museums and wadas that draw visitors stand a short way north of the junction rather than on it. Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum is one. Vishrambaug Wada and Mahatma Phule Wada belong to the same older grid, as does the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal.
What Swargate itself offers is the approach: the traffic for Hadapsar and Fursungi passing the last of the old city on its way out.
What is the history of Swargate?
The wards of the old city end at Swargate, and everything beyond it, Hadapsar, Fursungi, Dhankawadi, Bibwewadi, was reached from this point rather than counted as part of the town. That role fixed the shape of the place long before the newer colonies filled in around it. Guru Nanak Nagar came later.
