The Maharshi Karve Memorial honours Dhondo Keshav Karve, whose Hingne foundation gave the suburb its name after the older village.

What is the history of Karvenagar?
The village was called Hingne. The name changed when the suburb was renamed for Dhondo Keshav Karve, the social reformer who campaigned for widow remarriage. In 1896 he founded an Aanath Ashram here and the first school for girls and widows, the institution that came to be known as the Hingne Stree Shikshan Sanstha.
The Maharshi Karve Memorial marks the man, and the older name survives inside the Sanstha's title rather than on the suburb.
